Silver Creek: The fishing on Silver Creek since the seasons opening has been very good despite many windy days in early June. We have had great and challenging midge fishing and consistent morning PMD hatches. The Brown Drakes were fabulous again this year, but this hatch is about over. There are still a few around and the trout are interested in these large Mayflies. With the recent warm weather, the Damsel flies have started hatching along certain reaches of the Creek. We are also seeing a few of the tiny Baetis Spinners as well. There are some Green and Gray Drakes hatching in select areas. These hatches are very sparse, but most trout rise eagerly to these huge Mayflies. Big Wood River: The Big Wood River is now flowing at 1100 cfs and is steadily dropping. The runoff peaked on June 18th at 1550 cfs. The river is starting to fish now for the summer season and we have seen a few mayflies hatching. These are the large Green Drakes and the smaller Western Quills. These two hatches will intensify and peak during the first two weeks of July. Big Lost River: The Big Lost River below Mackay Reservoir has been steadily flowing at 700/750 cfs. Wading from the public access points is difficult. One must be very careful and should wear a floatation device. The fishing has been good with nymphs and we have seen some afternoon hatches of Baetis. The PMDs and Little Yellow Stones have started and the trout are looking up! There are a few of the large Golden Stones hatching as well. Fishing is excellent and will improve as we move towards the first week of July. |
